MIKE Performance

November 22, 2008

During the 08-09 school year, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame’s MIKE program (Music in Kids’ Education) presents music performances for students.  Musical artists and groups from around the state present two shows per day, at 10 am and 11:30 am. School groups and home-schoolers are encouraged to participate. Space is limited; reservations are required. The 45-minute performances are included with regular museum admission: $3.50 for ages 4-17. 751.3334

7:30 p.m.: Hitting the Road on Mars presentation by Nagin Cox
Nagin Cox will show how her engineering team at NASA has kept the Exploration Rovers studying history and environment of Mars for over five years, which is ten times longer than they were expected to survive.

After the presentation: Explore all of the National Geographic MAPS exhibition, including the full-scale Mars Exploration Rover model, and enjoy out-of-this-world refreshments!

Opening Reception at The Tubman

The Tubman African American Museum is featuring a very special exhibition entitled Wall Spirits, Compositions and Other Secrets, with more than thirty paintings by the artist Larry Walker.  A Georgia native, Larry Walker has successfully maintained a career as an exhibiting artist and educator for over forty years.  Since his retirement from teaching in 2000, Walker has devoted his full attention to his own art making.

On Sunday, November 16th the Tubman Museum will host a very special event to celebrate this special artist and this special exhibition.  Beginning at 3:00 P.M. Larry Walker will present a slide lecture on his career as an artist and the evolution of his imagery.  The lecture will be followed by a reception in his honor.  Admission to the lecture and reception is free for Museum Members, $5.00 for the General Public.  743-8544

Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Macon

NewTown Macon will offer a downtown walking tour of our downtown historic commercial buildings.  The tour, which begins at NewTown Macon’s office at 479 Cherry Street, will highlight the locations where historic markers have recently been installed.

Maryel Battin, a historic preservation consultant with NewTown Macon, will conduct the tour which will last approximately one hour.  Participants will see a building, now housing legal offices, which was once a saddlery known as the Hotel de Horse, where the inventor of Coca Cola syrup went to college and a former drugstore that sold Compound Syrup of Tar and Magic Pain Destroyer.

A donation of $5.00 per person to NewTown Macon is requested.  Refreshments will be served at the end of the tour.  For reservations or more information call NewTown Macon at 478-722-9909.
